This week I’m thinking about fun…

Here’s a call that, as a pastor, one never thinks one will field:
“Uh… Pastor? There’s a location scout from a filming company on the phone who wants to rent our building and parking lot.”

Huh… I think to myself… what’s this angle?

Only… no angle!! It really was a location scout from an actual filming company. And not only that, it is a BIG movie coming out — big screen, movie theater popcorn, movie! And while they don’t want to film me or our church, they do want to rent some space from us. And we will be in the midst of this production. We will have a hand in it.

There will be “extras” in our building, a child member of the cast who will be using classroom space (presumably someone I may get to meet?), maybe even the Best Boy? I’ve always wanted to meet the Best Boy and the Gaffer…

HOW FUN IS THAT!?

There is a time to weep.
And there’s a time to laugh.
There is a time to be sad.
And there’s a time to dance.

Ecclesiastes 3:14

Now, I don’t think that Cindy Lauper is the only one who thinks that “Girls(and boys!) just wanna have fun” — I am pretty sure that God has fun in mind for us every day. After all, didn’t God make a garden just for the first humans and put four rivers in it? Not to mention all those animals and whatnot? What were we supposed to do but to have some fun?

Oh, I know, the rest of the bible is so full of seriousness. Very little fun (sure some parts are fun-ny… but that is different). But there are moments. Ecclesiastes reminds us that “there is a time to weep. There is a time to laugh” (3:14) and in Luke’s Gospel Jesus blesses the crowds by saying: “Blessed are you who are sad now, you will laugh” (6:21).

So, please know that God looks down on your fun and laughs with you. That your fun means something to God. And if you aren’t having any — well, take pleasure in something!! I promise that a good laugh, a big smile, a light heart will help your spirit sing.
